As online shopping continues to grow each year, I wanted to provide details on what you can expect from shoppers. Here is a sneak peek of two reports about this holiday season (you are able to purchase or download the full reports if desired).

Holiday Online Shopping Trends

The first report by Episerver is based on a survey taken from 4,500 global online shoppers. It provides tips on increasing sales by “delivering more customer-centric experiences”. This means that offering a more personalized experience can help you compete with bigger retailers such as Amazon. 47% of surveyees actually said they would by buying few or no gifts from Amazon.

This is especially true for apparel shopping as 43% said they go straight to a brand or retailer’s site. Another way to compete is with Free Shipping as 67% ranked free shipping as the number 1 service shoppers expect online. This is followed by providing shipping tracking, which is especially important when customers are needing gifts to arrive before Christmas.

With faster shipping now being available, shoppers are even waiting until later to make their purchases. December 1st-15th is actually the most popular time to shop other than late November.

2019 Shopping Forecast

The other report from eMarketer tells of the milestones this next holiday season will reach. eMarketer forecasts that retail sales in the US will increase by 3.8% to $1.008 trillion. This will be the first-ever trillion-dollar holiday season. Ecommerce spending specifically is projected to climb 13.2% and hit $135.35 billion.

Expected growth is thanks to a robust consumer economy, low unemployment, a strong stock market, and increasing wages. One drawback, however, is that there is a smaller timeframe between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. This means less time to shop but also means customers will be eager to start making purchases.
