I’m sure you’re all doing a great job keeping up on your diet and exercise plans for the new year, right? 😉

Hopefully, you’re making good progress and taking steps towards reaching your goal! We all know exercise increases our metabolism, but did you know certain foods and beverages can also give your body a boost?

Incorporate these 5 items into your diet and give your body a hand. Especially if you have a desk job, like me, and need all the help you can get!

1. Apples & Pears

Not only does an apple a day keep the doctor away, but it also boosts metabolism! In a study performed by State University of Rio de Janeiro, women who ate three small apples or pears a day were able to lose more weight than women who did not. Who knew these delicious fruits can help you drop pounds! 

2. Hot Peppers

Spice up your diet with peppers like habaneros, jalapenos, and cayenne. In addition to spiking metabolism, hot peppers also improve circulation and reduce cravings. If you start sweating while eating peppers, just know it’s worth the metabolism boost of up to 25%! This spike can last for up to 3 hours, so add a tablespoon of chili peppers to a meal once a day to reap the benefits.

3. Whole Grains

Since whole grains take more effort to break down in your body, they help you burn more fat. This creates a slow-release of carbs that can give you lasting energy that is full of nutrients. Oatmeal and brown rice are great whole grains that are easy to fit into your diet. Oatmeal is a quick and easy breakfast that is one of my personal favorites. You can add a dash of cinnamon and fruit for extra deliciousness.

4. Green Tea

Multiple studies have found that green tea extract significantly boosts the metabolism. It is also rich in antioxidants and contains a compound called EGCG, which promotes fat burning. Try replacing a cup of coffee for green tea a few times a week, or even every day if you can! If you’re not crazy about plain green tea, try some teas with fruit flavors like blueberry green tea or tropical green tea.

5. Water

You read it correctly! Good ‘ol H2O is great for keeping your metabolism going. Even if you’re only slightly dehydrated your metabolism will slow down. Drinking water (especially cold water) provides a good boost with no calories! Water is also a natural detoxifier and appetite suppressant. Try drinking a glass or 2 of water before each meal to help you feel full faster and stay hydrated.
